Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) released the following statement today marking the end of the 2023 tax filing season:
“This Tax Day, the contrast is clear – while Democrats delivered a significant down payment on improving taxpayer services, Republicans are doubling down on undoing this progress to protect tax cheats. Thanks to our investment, this filing season, the IRS answered 2 million more calls through live assistance, cut wait times dramatically, served 100,000 more taxpayers in-person, cleared the 2022 returns backlog, and launched new digital tools to help taxpayers. Ways and Means Democrats are committed to reducing the tax gap by eliminating our two-tiered system that has allowed the wealthy and well-connected to exploit the system while American workers and families pay the price for far too long. That’s why we enacted the Inflation Reduction Act and look forward to working with Commissioner Werfel to deliver world-class service, reduce the deficit, and hold tax evaders accountable.”
